Used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine for it's anti-inflammatory benefits, turmeric has an earthy aroma, and a unique flavor that enhances savory (or sweet!) foods. Turmeric is in the same family as ginger root, and can be used fresh or boiled, dried, and ground into a bright yellow powder that is most commonly used in curry. The flavor of the fresh root is much softer and subtler than the dried form, and not at all bitter. This fresh turmeric root is only available for a limited time in the fall, but it freezes well.
